Dr. Aban Keki Gharda
(1932 - 2017)
Dr. Aban Keki Gharda was a distinguished sociologist and a thoughtful social advocate whose work reflected a deep concern for dignity, equity, and the lived realities of marginalized communities. She held a PhD in Sociology and dedicated her academic research to understanding the conditions of domestic workers, a field that had received limited scholarly attention at the time.
Her research culminated in the well-regarded book The Domestic Servant, which offered a rigorous and empathetic examination of domestic labor in India. Through her work, she brought visibility to an often-overlooked segment of society and contributed meaningfully to conversations around workers’ rights and social justice.
In addition to her academic contributions, Dr. Gharda served as a Director at Gharda Chemicals, supporting the organization founded by her husband, Dr. Keki Hormusji Gharda, one of India’s most respected scientists and industrial leaders.
Dr. Aban Keki Gharda is remembered for her intellectual rigor, compassion, and quiet commitment to social causes. Her life’s work continues to inspire initiatives that seek to advance understanding, fairness, and opportunity for underserved communities.
She passed away on September 22, 2017, in Mumbai.
